DOVER, Del. (AP) - The Delaware Board of Pardons has recommended a man imprisoned for a murder committed when he was 17 serve out the rest of his sentence on house arrest, with work release.

The News Journal reports the board listened to Byron Shawn Dickerson’s request Tuesday. It’s up to Gov. John Carney to act on the commutation recommendation.

After 26 years in prison, Dickerson would be released in a little over a year for good behavior, but he told the panel he’s already secured a job and would like to start a new life.

Dickerson was initially sentenced to life in prison without parole for ordering the 1990 killing of Kevin Brown, his girlfriend’s brother. He was resentenced in 2014 after the U.S. Supreme Court declared mandatory life-without-parole sentences for juvenile killers unconstitutional.
