Vice President Pence declared space is a “war fighting domain” on Tuesday while promoting new policy proposals for the Trump administration’s Space Force.
Mr. Pence warned that the final frontier was “fundamentally different” than it was during the glory days of space exploration a generation ago.
“Space is a war fighting domain just like the land, air, and sea,” he said, “And America will be as dominant there as we are here on Earth.”
The vice president said countries like China and Russia have launched attacks against U.S. satellites from Earth and are aiming to do so in space. He explained that they are working to bring weapons above the atmosphere to target satellites and develop “highly threatening on-orbit activities.”
Mr. Pence said that the National Space Council will be presenting six recommendations to President Trump that outline the council’s vision for establishing Space Force. It includes a plan to create a Combatant Command for the sixth military branch and the joint Space Development Agency to minimize bureaucratic oversight.
“Space Force will ensure the next era of American supremacy in space,” Mr. Pence said.
