BABYLON, N.Y. (AP) - New York officials say they’ve found an invasive insect called the spotted lanternfly at a Long Island tree nursery.
According to Newsday , officials say one live and several dead spotted lanternflies came to Suffolk County in a shipment that originated in Pennsylvania.
New York’s Department of Agriculture had enacted a quarantine on movement of landscaping debris and other items from four states after the insect was found in Albany and Yates counties.
The agriculture commissioner, Richard Ball, says the public has been critical in the fight to keep the insect out of the state.
The invasive pest feeds on apple trees, grapes, hops and other plants.
Adults resemble colorful moths, and they are active from July to December.
