PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The design team working on a Rhode Island highway interchange project says a traffic study commissioned by the state will slow the overhaul and increase costs.

The Providence Journal reports that 6/10 Constructors issued a claim against the state Friday citing delayed lane shifts and closures on the interchange of Routes 6 and 10 project. Rhode Island Department of Transportation spokesman Charles St. Martin didn’t say what caused the late study.

The department has approved lane closures at night and says it will cover the added nighttime hour costs.

The interchange of Routes 6 and 10 needs an urgent fix because seven of its nine bridges are structurally deficient. Officials have estimated the total cost of the project at $410 million. The contract award is for $248 million.
