DOVER, Del. (AP) - State officials are eyeing changes to prevailing wage regulations for public works projects.

Officials are accepting written comments on the proposed changes through next week.

The prevailing wage law sets pay scales, often driven by union wages, for laborers on public works projects. Critics say it artificially drives up taxpayer costs on government construction projects.

The changes include limiting the fringe benefit deductions that can be considered in determining whether an employer has met prevailing wage obligations and clarifying the appeals process.

The proposal also updates the regulations to reflect a statutory change made several years ago increasing the threshold at which prevailing wage law applies. The threshold was increased from $100,000 for new construction and $15,000 for repairs and renovations to $500,000 for new construction and $45,000 for repairs.
