PLYMOUTH, Mass. (AP) - Federal waterway managers say the removal of a dam in Massachusetts represents the final important step toward the restoration of a historic brook.

The National Marine Fisheries Service says the removal of Holmes Dam late last month means the 16-year project to restore Town Brook in Plymouth has cleared its last major hurdle.

The project has involved the removal and alteration of several dams in the area to make way for improved fish passageways.

The fisheries service says the removal of Holmes Dam late last month means the entire habitat restoration project will be just about finished by 2020. The service says the project will help restore runs of river herring, which were an important source of food in the area going back centuries ago.
