The Washington Capitals have claimed right winger Dmitrij Jaskin off waivers from the St. Louis Blues.
The 25-year-old Czech has tallied double-digit points each of the last four years, including six goals and 11 assists in 2017-18. He was the 41st overall pick (second round) by the Blues in 2011.
Claiming Jaskin is a likely reaction to the news that top-line right winger Tom Wilson will have an in-person hearing with the NHL Department of Safety Wednesday. Wilson checked the Blues’ Oskar Sundqvist to the head in the Capitals’ preseason finale, leaving Sundqvist with multiple injuries.
With Wilson going to New York on Wednesday for the hearing, it’s unlikely he’ll play in the regular season opener that night in Washington. Furthermore, Wilson being offered an in-person hearing means the league believes the player deserves a suspension of at least six games.
The Blues waived Jaskin with the intent of assigning him to their AHL affiliate if he cleared. With injuries to Travis Boyd and Michal Kempny and the likely suspension coming for Wilson, the Capitals will likely have Jaskin on the 23-man roster by Tuesday at 5 p.m.
