BOSTON (AP) - Officials estimate that Massachusetts lost more than 6,000 jobs in September, reversing several months of gains as the summer season winded down.

The state Office of Labor and Workforce Development also said Friday that the state’s overall unemployment rate stood at 3.6 percent in September, unchanged from the previous month and still slightly below the national jobless rate of 3.7 percent.

Preliminary estimates from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics shows Massachusetts lost 6,200 jobs last month. It was the first month-to-month loss since January.

The leisure and hospitality sector shed more than 9,000 jobs in September, with losses also reported in arts and entertainment, but also in manufacturing.

Still, Massachusetts has added an estimated 63,400 jobs over the past 12 months.
