PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s unemployment rate ticked down to 3.9 percent in September, reaching its lowest point in nearly 30 years.
Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo said Thursday it’s the lowest rate seen in Rhode Island since June 1989.
The state Department of Labor and Training says it’s one-tenth of a percentage point lower than in August and two-tenths of a percentage point higher than the national rate.
The state’s rate is six-tenths of a percentage point lower than a year ago.
The data shows that the number of jobs based in Rhode Island held steady at 502,100. The job count is up 7,000 from September 2017.
Raimondo echoed her campaign theme by saying that the consistent progress shows that the state’s new approach to economic development is working. She faces Republican Allan Fung in November.
