PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence has agreed to still pay a private bus company $600,000 for the time its bus drivers went on strike and disrupted travel for thousands of students.
WPRI-TV reports a spokeswoman for Mayor Jorge Elorza said Monday the city will pay First Student, Inc. $300,000 per year for the next two years.
She says the payments will not change the overall cost of the contract the company has with the city, but she did not say how the money will be used.
Bus drivers launched an 11-day walkout on Sept. 27 over a dispute with the company over retirement benefits. More than 9,000 students were affected.
Bus drivers returned to work Monday after voting to approve a new contract with increased retirement contributions.
