WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island city has entered a legal dispute with its firefighters over unused sick time.
Michael Carreiro, spokesman for the Warwick firefighters union, tells The Providence Journal firefighters filed a grievance after the city stopped a monthly credit that they received for unused sick time.
Carreiro says the credit was based on a “side agreement” with the previous mayor’s administration, which current Mayor Joseph Solomon says was improperly implemented.
Critics of the agreement say firefighters who already paid for unused sick time should not have received an additional credit. The credits were suspended in July.
Solomon declined to comment further, saying the issue was a legal matter.
Carreiro says he believes firefighters have not taken more benefits than what they are already entitled.
