NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Charleston Southern has been placed on two years’ probation, ordered to give up six football scholarships and vacate records for several sports by the NCAA for rules violations.
The decision was released by the NCAA and Charleston Southern on Tuesday. The case involved the school improperly certifying 55 athletes across several sports between the 2011-12 and 2016-17 academic years.
Also, 34 athletes impermissibly spent $11,962 of their book scholarships on items like electronics, jewelry and clothes. The NCAA said in its decision that school staffers wrongly told the athletes if they did not spend their book money, it would go back to school.
Charleston Southern competes in the FCS Big South Conference.
The school accepted the NCAA’s penalties and will not appeal.
