LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) - Investigators are examining what caused a small plane to crash Sunday in suburban Atlanta.
Local news outlets report a flight instructor and a student pilot walked away Sunday afternoon before the single-engine Cessna 172 was engulfed in flames at Gwinnett County Airport in Lawrenceville.
The pilots were conducting touch-and-go maneuvers just before the crash. Air traffic controllers tell officials the pilots didn’t make a distress call, but experienced a hard landing.
The plane was destroyed by the fire.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
It was the second plane crash in two days in Georgia. A single-engine Piper PA-28A crashed Saturday in Paulding County, killing the pilot. He was identified Sunday as 70-year-old Paul Deep of Middleburg, Florida. The plane didn’t burn and investigators aren’t sure what caused the crash.
