Aaron Hernandez, the former New England Patriots tight end who was serving a lifetime sentence for slaying his friend before he hanged himself in his jail cell in 2017, is the subject of a new investigative series by the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team.
Hernandez’s brother Jonathan told the paper Hernandez had confided in him that he was sexually molested as a young boy.
One of Hernandez’s lawyers also said his client told him this, though neither source told the Globe who molested Hernandez.
Other details in the first part of the Globe’s six-part series paint a portrait of a very violent atmosphere around Hernandez as he was brought up in Bristol, Connecticut. His father, Dennis Hernandez, once punched Hernandez’s youth football coach in the face over a coaching disagreement.
That coach’s son, Dennis SanSoucie, said he and Aaron Hernandez frequently used marijuana before football practices and after games, and had a “now-and-then sexual relationship” together in middle school and high school.
Hernandez was given a life sentence without parole for killing former friend Odin Lloyd in 2013. He was later found not guilty in the investigation of a drive-by shooting.
