SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Volunteers say a “lucky cat” is recovering after she was stolen from a pet store adoption room in Santa Fe and then returned with singed whiskers, dilating eyes and barely able to stand up.

Chanid New, a volunteer coordinator for Felines and Friends New Mexico, tells the Santa Fe New Mexican that Midge the kitten was taken from a Petco in town Monday then returned the next day wearing a sweater, collar and leash.

By Wednesday, she was walking around again, though not yet put up again for adoption.

It wasn’t clear who took or returned the 3-month-old kitten.

Felines and Friends’ executive director Bobbi Heller tells KOB that a Facebook campaign was launched to “get someone guilted into returning her.”

Among Midge’s other symptoms, a veterinarian also believed she was suffering from a toxin, possibly resulting from drugs.
