COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Former Vice President Joe Biden is returning to South Carolina this weekend to stump for the Democratic nominee for governor.
On Saturday, state Rep. James Smith planned to appear at a fundraiser in Charleston with the former vice president, according to Smith’s campaign. Last month, Biden had been scheduled to join a fundraiser for Smith at the William Aiken House in Charleston, but that trip was canceled due to an unspecified scheduling conflict for Biden.
Smith, who faces Republican incumbent Gov. Henry McMaster in the Nov. 6 general election, is among the Democrats who have said they’d like to see the 75-year-old Biden make a run for the White House in 2020. Biden has said that it will be at least January until he decides on if he’ll mount a presidential bid.
While in South Carolina, Biden’s also planning to stump for Dick Harpootlian, a longtime adviser and ally who is vying for a state Senate seat in the Columbia area.
Harpootlian unsuccessfully tried to persuade Biden to run in 2016, saying he was disappointed in his decision not to do so.
