BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The Catholic Diocese of Burlington says it is selling the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, citing low attendance and increased financial struggles.
WCAX-TV reports the diocese says it is deciding between two real estate firms to list the property. The city has the building valued at $2.1 million and the land at more than $2.2 million.
Bishop Christopher Coyne says the property will not be sold to a firm that would use it for something “contrary to Catholic teaching.”
He says any money from the sale could not be used by the diocese.
The decision comes after the congregation chose to merge with the Cathedral of Saint Joseph’s in May.
The churches are less than 10 minutes apart on foot.
