GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - The Bureau of Land Management plans to use a helicopter to round up additional wild horses to be removed from rangeland in western Colorado.

The Daily Sentinel in Grand Junction reports the agency plans to remove 60 horses from the 190-member herd on Little Book Cliffs Wild Horse Range and put them up for adoption.

The agency used hay and water to lure 47 horses into corrals. They chose 27 to remove based on factors such as age and genetic lineage.

However, the bait wasn’t attracting horses from more remote locations on the range.

BLM spokeswoman Emily Davis says a contract helicopter was expected to begin rounding up horses on Sunday in an operation that could take a week to 10 days.

The BLM says the horses need to be removed due to overgrazing.
