FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) - Officials are making some changes aimed at keeping participants in Colorado State University’s homecoming parade safe after a boy’s death during a nearby community’s Labor Day event.
Campus police say everyone participating in the parade will have to sign a list of safety requirements. In the past, those were read aloud during a pre-event meeting.
New requirements include pulling floats over in an emergency and leaving three car lengths between each motorized float.
The Coloradoan reports that the changes are partially in response to the death of an 8-year-old boy during a Labor Day parade in Windsor, Colo. The boy fell while either walking next to or riding on a church-sponsored float during that event.
CSU police spokeswoman Dell Rae Ciaravola says officials also consulted national safety requirements for parades.
