WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - The head of the Delaware National Guard has announced her retirement.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Carol Timmons said Thursday that she will retire from her post in March 2019. The 42-year-old veteran said in an email to her “Delaware National Guard family” that she’s grateful to the state and organization.

A state news release says Timmons has more than 400 combat flight hours and is a veteran of seven overseas combat deployments. It says she worked for United Airlines before serving in her current role. She is a member of the state’s aviation and women’s halls of fame.

Gov. John Carney has nominated Brigadier Gen. Michael Berry as the next adjutant general. Berry is the director of the Delaware National Guard’s Joint Staff.
