President Trump said Thursday that he is not focused on finding the author of the anonymous New York Times op-ed that criticized his administration, but he provided a new theory as to who could have penned the piece, according to an interview with Fox News’ “Fox & Friends.”
“I would like to [keep searching],” Mr. Trump said and then suggested that “It could have been The New York Times.”
The president noted that it was “probably not” The Times, but he stressed that it was a possibility.
The Times’ piece detailed attempts made by one “senior administration official” to be part of the Resistance from inside the Trump government. It portrayed the White House as chaotic under Mr. Trump’s leadership, which is allegedly undermined by staffers.
The controversial op-ed captured the D.C. rumor mill’s attention when it was published in September as people tried to figure out who was the top senior official behind the words. Several top officials, including Vice President Mike Pence, denied having anything to do with the piece.
Mr. Trump slammed The Times as “totally corrupt” and dishonest. He also returned to criticizing the use of anonymous sources in the media, arguing that journalists who use them are “like novelists.”
