President Trump said Wednesday night that picking a different Supreme Court nominee during the height of the controversy over sexual assault allegations against now-Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh would have been “the easier path.”
In an interview with the Washington Examiner, the president explained there are “amazing people” on his Supreme Court list, but he refused to abandon Judge Kavanaugh.
“I felt it would be so horrible and so unfair to him, I thought it would have been destructive, it would have been terrible,” Mr. Trump told the Washington Examiner.
He explained that he thought the confirmation process would be “very easy” because of the nominee’s “exemplary life.”
Justice Kavanaugh was accused by three women of sexual assault near the end of his confirmation hearings. After a bitterly fought battle in Congress, the judge was confirmed on Saturday with a narrow margin.
He had a ceremonial swearing-in Monday night and heard his first arguments on the Supreme Court Tuesday.
