OCT. 11 UPDATE:
Tuesday and Thursday testing from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. EDT (10 a.m.-2 p.m. CDT) are national tests that replicate condensed poll closing times. Test votes for Kansas are expected to begin at 1:30 p.m. EDT (12:30 p.m. CDT).
ELECTION PROFILE:
The AP is tabulating 78 contested races in the Kansas general election, including the open governor’s seat, four congressional races, secretary of state, attorney general, treasurer, insurance commissioner, a special general election for state Senate District 13, state House seats and three Board of Education races.
Democratic state Sen. Laura Kelly, Republican Secretary of State Kris Kobach and businessman Greg Orman, an Independent, are in what has been described as a three-way contest for governor. Political observers say Orman’s candidacy will be a likely factor in the outcome of the race. Kobach defeated incumbent Gov. Jeff Colyer in the GOP primary. Also on the ballot are Libertarian Jeff Caldwell and Independent Rick Kloos.
The GOP holds all four of the state’s congressional seats going into the general election.
Democrat Paul Davis, the former state House minority leader, and Republican Steve Watkins, an Army veteran and engineer, are vying in what is considered a tossup to replace GOP U.S. House 2 Rep. Lynn Jenkins, who is not seeking re-election. Incumbent Republican Rep. Kevin Yoder is in a tight race with attorney and economic adviser Sharice Davids, a Democrat, in U.S. House 3, which includes Kansas City and some of its suburbs.
ANOMALIES:
Four western Kansas counties (Greeley, Hamilton, Sherman and Wallace) are in the Mountain Time Zone, with polls closing at 9 p.m. EST (8 p.m. CST).

TESTING INFORMATION:
Testing begins Monday, Oct. 8. AP will be testing on Mondays from 1-3 p.m. EDT/noon-2 p.m. CDT (two hours) and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. EDT/10 a.m.-2 p.m. CDT (four hours).
Last election test is Monday, Nov. 5 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. EST/10 a.m.-2 p.m. CDT (four hours). No winners will be called during the last test.
This advisory will be updated throughout the testing period.
Zeros will be transmitted after testing on the eve of the election.
Race calls: AP will make race calls on election night unless a race is too close to call. Race calls will be made during testing, except on the day of the final test.
Races and candidates are considered preliminary. AP will advise when they are final.
Statewide and race-specific precinct totals in early tests are considered preliminary.
Uncontested races: AP does not tabulate uncontested races. A list of races, KS-Uncontested, will move to premium service subscribers at ftp://electionsonline.ap.org/KS/anpa/ and to state news and broadcast services after the last polls close.
Winners: AP will move a list of unofficial winners at the end of tabulation and during each test, except on the final day of testing. A list of winners, KS-Winners, will move to premium services at ftp://electionsonline.ap.org/KS/anpa/.
End of tabulation: AP will advise when its election night tabulation of results has concluded, generally before 6 p.m. local time the day after the election.
TESTING BASICS:
Test results are created electronically to test the accuracy of the election night reporting system and do not reflect an expectation of election results. They should not be broadcast, published, replicated or posted on websites.
It is vital to read weekly advisories during testing. Advisories move to news service advisory queues. Advisories note updates to candidates, races and precincts, along with the date when updates will appear. Changes may be made up to Election Day.
AP advises capture of each test during the testing period and particularly during the final test on the day before the election to ensure readiness to take results on Election Day.
Report frequency in testing may not reflect the actual election night schedule. For example, county tables for contested U.S. House races move to Member Choice subscribers in each test but will move just twice on election night.

DEFINITIONS OF KEY WORDS IN STATE SLUGS:
“TopRaces-Glance-Sum” contains race-wide results in summary format for contests AP considers editorially significant (Governor and U.S. House Districts 2 and 3).
“Glance” reports include summary results for one or more races with similar characteristics, including statewide races (Statewid-Glance-Sum) and Board of Education (BdEd-Glance-Sum).
“Contested” provides results in summary format for contested legislative races.
“Trend” tables show the balance of power between political parties in a state legislative body and Congressional delegation.
“Cnty” provides results in tabular format by county for a race.
“Long” are vote summaries listed by county in long summary format.
“Winners” lists winners of all contested and uncontested races.
