Melania Trump backs #MeToo movement while calling for ‘hard evidence’ in sexual assault allegations

First lady Melania Trump said she supports the #MeToo movement, but “hard evidence” is needed when evaluating accusations of sexual assault.

“I support the women, and they need to be heard,” she said in an interview with ABC News. “Good Morning America” first showed the preview of Mrs. Trump’s interview from Africa on Wednesday, and the full interview will air Friday.

“I do stand with women, but we need to show the evidence,” the first lady said.

Mrs. Trump blamed the media for being part of the problem. She said it sometimes “goes too far” with stories and stressed that is why an accuser’s word alone is not enough.

Stephanie Grisham, Mrs. Trump’s spokeswoman, reiterated the first lady’s comments on Twitter in response to a CNN article on the clip.

“There are two potential sides: Victims should feel safe enough to come forward but people who are falsely accused can have their lives changed forever and deserve due process,” she wrote.

The first lady’s comments come after her husband’s Supreme Court pick, now-Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh, was accused by three separate women of sexual assault.

At the insistence of key Republican senators, President Trump ordered a supplemental FBI background investigation into the allegations. Upon reading the FBI report, Republican Sens. Jeff Flake of Arizona and Susan Collins of Maine said there was not enough evidence to prove Justice Kavanaugh was guilty of the assaults.

Though the first lady did not attend Justice Kavanaugh’s ceremonial swearing-in at the White House, Mr. Trump said he was “proven innocent.”

“On behalf of our nation, I want to apologize to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the terrible pain and suffering you have been forced to endure,” Mr. Trump said Monday night.
