LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The head of the retirement system for Arkansas’ public school teachers is leaving his job by the end of the year.
Arkansas Teacher Retirement System Executive Director George Hopkins said Monday he plans to retire in December. Hopkins said he made the announcement earlier that day to the system’s board of directors. Hopkins says he has been eligible to retire for more than six years, but never felt the timing worked until now.
Hopkins is a former state senator and was hired in 2008 to run the system, which oversees $17 billion in investments for more than 100,000 working and retired teachers around the state. ATRS is the state government’s largest retirement system.
