BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is rallying support on Long Island for Democratic candidates for the state Senate.

Several Long Island districts have emerged as key battlegrounds in the Democrats’ effort to wrest control of the Senate from Republicans this fall.

Cuomo’s visit to Long Island on Monday is the latest indication that he will invest time and resources in the fight. Democrats already control the state Assembly, and Republicans say they’ll work hard to keep Senate control.

The governor is planning a series of fundraisers later this month to raise campaign cash for Democratic challengers looking to oust GOP senators.

Cuomo also unveiled a series of proposals Monday focused on Long Island, including greater investments in transportation, environmental protection and anti-gang initiatives.
