BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) - The now-shuttered Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant is going to lay off all but two dozen employees by the end of the month.
Officials from Entergy Nuclear told the Nuclear Decommissioning Citizens Advisory Panel Thursday the layoffs follow the transfer of spent nuclear fuel into an interim storage location at the Vernon facility.
The Brattleboro Reformer reports Entergy decommissioning Director Corey Daniels says there are currently about 150 workers on the Vernon site, including private contractors, security officials and 57 Entergy employees. He says that after the layoffs, 25 to 27 people will remain at the plant.
Vermont Yankee employed 600 people at its height before the plant ceased operation.
Entergy intends to sell the plant to NorthStar Holding Co., which will dismantle the plant.
