President Trump pushed back Friday against criticism from former first lady Michelle Obama by taking aim at her husband.

“I’ll never forgive [former President Barack Obama] for what he did to our United States military,” Mr. Trump told reporters outside the White House. “Everything was old and tired and I had to come in to fix it.”

Mrs. Obama drew the president’s ire with her new book “Becoming,” in which she said she would “never forgive” Mr. Trump for touting the birther conspiracy theories about former President Barack Obama, according to excerpts published by The Washington Post.

“The whole [birther] thing was crazy and mean-spirited, of course, its underlying bigotry and xenophobia hardly concealed. But it was also dangerous, deliberately meant to stir up the wingnuts and kooks,” Mrs. Obama wrote, The Post reported.

She wrote about her concern that someone “with an unstable mind” would come looking for her children with a gun, and blamed the president for risking her family’s safety.

Mr. Trump fired back Friday, again criticizing his predecessor’s handling of the military.

“Because she talked about safety, what [Mr. Obama] did to our military made this country very unsafe for you and you and you,” Mr. Trump told reporters.
