NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Newport plans to review a list of recommendations for short-term rental programs issued by a task force that studied the city’s housing market.
The Newport Daily News reports the Short Term Rentals Investigatory Group was formed in June to study platforms like Airbnb and HomeAway.
According to the group, “habitual infringement on existing ordinances” has disrupted the Newport’s local housing market.
The task force recommends Newport hire a short-term rental administration officer to register rentals and enforce rules. Other suggestions include increasing registration fees, adopting an online registration program and levying fines for improper renting.
Rental taxes are a major revenue source for Newport. On any given day, there are about 1,400 listings on Airbnb for daily, weekend or weekly rentals.
