PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Democratic U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse says the Department of Justice should look at whether the new acting attorney general should be recused from the special counsel’s investigation into potential coordination between the president’s campaign and Russia.

Whitehouse told The Associated Press on Wednesday that until that’s done, Matthew Whitaker should be recused from the Mueller investigation.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Whitaker should recuse himself from overseeing the Mueller investigation given his previous public comments that appeared to exhibit hostility toward the inquiry.

Whitehouse says it’s “deeply troubling” that Whitaker has written about ending the investigation. He says it’s a “very real prospect” that Attorney General Jeff Sessions was pushed out as a way to interfere with the Mueller investigation. He says we don’t want “obstruction from within.”
