NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Authorities will be giving out and installing smoke alarms this weekend in a trailer park next door to the lot where two children died last month in a burning mobile home.
Representatives of the Red Cross, State Fire Marshal’s Office and Belle Chasse Volunteer Fire Department also will go door-to-door with smoke alarms in a neighborhood about two miles down Louisiana Highway 23, the Red Cross said in a news release Wednesday.
All people need to do to get a smoke alarm and fire safety information is be home between 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday.
Households in need also can get smoke alarms year-round by calling 844-741-7270 or filling out a form on the agency’s website .
The Red Cross says seven people die in home fires around the country every day. It’s trying to eliminate one-quarter of such deaths by 2020, with a campaign it started in 2014.
Saturday’s event is part of “Sound the Alarm,” a nationwide Red Cross initiative for volunteers and partners to provide home fire safety education and free smoke alarm installations to households in need.
According to its website, the Red Cross and its partners have installed more than 9,500 smoke alarms in Louisiana.
