JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi’s largest private electrical utility wants to build a $138 million solar farm in the Mississippi Delta region.
Entergy Mississippi said Thursday that it’s hiring a subsidiary of Canadian Solar to build the facility in Sunflower County, pending regulatory approval.
The contractor would build the 100-megawatt facility on 1,000 acres near Ruleville starting in 2021, with completion projected for 2022.
The unit of New Orleans-based Entergy Corp. would buy the facility on completion. Spokeswoman Mara Hartmann says customers would pay for it, although she says it’s too soon to estimate the impact on monthly bills.
The solar farm could provide about 3 percent of the power Entergy sells in Mississippi on the highest-demand days.
Entergy says it would be Mississippi’s largest utility-owned solar farm, able to power about 16,000 homes.
