BOSTON (AP) - A driver for ride-hailing company Uber has been charged with raping a passenger who had hired him to take her home after a night celebrating her birthday.

Michael Squadrito was held on $10,000 bail after a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf at his arraignment Wednesday.

Prosecutors say the woman went out Monday night in Boston and requested a ride home early Tuesday.

She told police she had been drinking but remembers the driver pulling over, getting in the back seat and raping her.

She reported the alleged rape at the hospital at about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Squadrito, a 40-year-old Everett man, told police the encounter was consensual.

His court-appointed attorney said her client is not a danger to the community and requested he be released without bail.
