President Trump said Wednesday that Senate Republican gains in the midterms “defied history,” as he took credit for putting his candidates over the top in key races.

“This vigorous campaign stopped the blue wave,” Mr. Trump said at a post-election press conference at the White House.

“We defied history to expand our Senate majority while significantly beating expectation in the House,” he said.

Mr. Trump noted that several of incumbent Republicans who lost in the House, which flipped to Democrat control in the election, did not “embrace” him or his agenda.

The president said that Republicans scored Senate wins despite a huge disadvantages, including a flood of money from liberal donors, hostile media coverage and a record number of House Republican retirements.
