CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Republicans will maintain control of both the West Virginia Senate and House of Delegates, although the GOP lost its majority leaders in both chambers.
Voters ousted Senate Majority Leader Ryan Ferns on Tuesday night. The Ohio County Republican lost to former U.S. Attorney Bill Ihlenfeld.
Ihlenfeld is a Democrat who was backed by teacher unions. Ferns came under scrutiny during a statewide teachers strike last winter.
In the House, Majority Leader and Jefferson County Republican Riley Moore was defeated by former Delegate John Doyle in a close race. Teachers unions had backed Doyle.
In other races, Randolph County teacher Cody Thompson was elected to a House seat.
Republicans will hold majorities of 20-14 in the Senate and 59-41 in the House.
