CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina says it is laying off nearly 250 employees.
The Post and Courier reports the layoffs are set to take effect Wednesday and will affect those who work at PGBA, a subsidiary that handles government contracts. The BlueCross subsidiary has offices in Surfside Beach and Florence.
Employees were notified in August of the layoffs, which has been attributed to the loss of a Veterans Administration Choice contract. A spokeswoman for BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, Patti Embry-Tautenhan, says job opportunities could become available at the offices as bids are made on additional government contracts.
