One Gwinnett County, Georgia voting precinct will stay open later than usual Tuesday after technical glitches caused long lines and forced voters to use paper ballots.
The Anniston Elementary School precinct near Snellville, Georgia, will remain open until 7:25 p.m., the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Polls typically close at 7:00 p.m. in Gwinnett County.
Unspecified issues with the electronic ExpressPoll system, which logs voters into their precinct, caused machines to shut down, resulting in long lines, the paper said.
Other polling places in Gwinnett County, including the Gwinnett Public Library Branch in Suwanee and Anderson-Livsey Elementary School in Snellville, reported similar problems.
Also, at the Anderson-Livesy school, a lack of power cords caused at least one voting machine to shut down after its battery died. The issue was not resolved until around 10:15, more than three hours after polls opened, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution said.
Georgia’s governor’s race is considered among the tightest in the country. Brian Kemp, Republican and Georgia secretary of state, is taking on Stacey Abrams, Democrat, who is vying to be the first black woman elected as governor in the United States.
