Democrat Gretchen Whitmer won Michigan’s governor’s race Tuesday, topping Attorney General Bill Schuette.
Her win continues a trend of voters in the state voting for a governor of the opposite party of the occupant of the White House — a trend that dates back four decades.
Michigan went for President Trump in 2016, but swung back toward Democrats, suggesting talk of a GOP realignment in the state was premature.
Ms. Whitmer will replace Gov. Rick Snyder, a Republican who has served as governor since 2011.
She served as a state representative from 2001 to 2006 and then as a state senator from 2006 to 2015.
Local issues like infrastructure dominated the race.
