Sen. Ben Cardin won re-election in Maryland on Tuesday, easily turning aside several challengers to win a third term in the U.S. Senate.
Mr. Cardin, first elected to the Senate in 2006, defeated Republican Tony Campbell, independent candidate Neal Simon, libertarian Arvin Vohra, and several write-in candidates.
The Associated Press called the race for Mr. Cardin at 8 p.m. - the same time polls closed in the state.
Mr. Cardin had also been challenged in a June primary by Chelsea Manning, the former government leaker turned transgender rights activist, but easily won the Democratic nomination.
Mr. Cardin recently served as the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for several years as Sen. Bob Menendez was facing corruption charges. Mr. Cardin is also a member of the tax-writing Senate Finance Committee.
A former congressman and member of the state House of Delegates, Mr. Cardin has held public office in Maryland in some capacity since 1967.
