In a rare self-critique, President Trump says he regrets the harsh tone he struck during his first two years in office.
“I would like to have a much softer tone. I feel to a certain extent I have no choice, but maybe I do,” the president said in an interview with Sinclair Broadcast Group that aired Monday.
Mr. Trump has been criticized for his tough and sometimes angry rhetoric following last months’ deadly synagogue shooting and a package bomb scare that targeted the president’s political foes.
He said he hoped to soften his tone after Tuesday’s midterms but would risk being “swamped” by his opponents.
“I would love to get along, and I think after the election a lot of things can happen. But right now they are in their mode, and we are in our mode. And you know if you’re criticized you have to hit back, or you should,” said Mr. Trump.
