Republican candidate and veteran Dan Crenshaw called for Pete Davidson and the Saturday Night Live producers to donate money to veteran support organizations.
Mr. Crenshaw, who is running for a House seat in Texas’ second district, said Monday he isn’t demanding an apology from Mr. Davidson but does think there is more the show can do to make up for the offensive humor aimed at his own war wounds.
“I think what him and maybe the producers at SNL should do is pool their money together. Let’s throw a figure out there: A million dollars,” he said on CNN’s “New Day,” “We will donate that to a series of veterans’ nonprofits.”
He suggested the Navy Seal Foundation, Folds of Honor, and the Wounded Warrior’s Project.
Mr. Crenshaw, a former Navy Seal, was the subject of a political skit on the most recent episode of Saturday Night Live, where Mr. Davidson mocked the veteran’s eye patch. He lost his eye after being severely injured during a tour in Afghanistan.
“You might be surprised he’s a congressional candidate from Texas and not a hitman in a porno movie,” the SNL comedian said, “I’m sorry, I know he lost his eye in war or something.”
For Mr. Crenshaw, his offense is taken on behalf of those who serve.
“As veterans, it’s hard for us to understand why war wounds would elicit such raucous laughter from an audience,” Mr. Crenshaw said, “They should have rethought that joke a little bit, if you can even call it a joke.”
