VALDOSTA, Ga. (AP) - A Georgia woman who played in bridge tournaments across the globe is celebrating her 100th birthday.

The Valdosta Daily Times reports Essie Norman had cake with family and friends at the nursing home where she lives. She was born in the central Georgia town of Hawkinsville on Oct. 28, 1918. She moved to Valdosta in 2013.

Norman said: “I’m happy now with this 100 and when more comes, then I just thank God for it.”

Norman’s great-nephew, J.C. Cunningham, says she used to play in far-flung bridge tournaments in countries including England and France. He says she kept traveling to play cards until age 97.

Norman joins an elite club of Georgia centenarians. The U.S. Census Bureau says 1,141 people age 100 or older lived in Georgia in 2010.
