PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police say a 43-year-old man who carjacked a tractor-trailer rig was fatally shot by an officer in a neighborhood where the man drove the stolen big rig.

Sgt. Tommy Thompson said police were trying to identify the dead suspect and that no officers were injured during the Thursday encounter about a block from where the truck was stolen in a business’ parking lot.

Thompson said an officer fatally shot the man when he reached for is waist band and turned away after failing to comply with commands and after police fired several non-lethal rounds with no little or effect

Thompson said it turned out that the gun the man used when he stole the truck was a replica and that he also had ammunition magazines with live rounds.
