AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine Attorney General Janet Mills has joined a group of attorneys general who are challenging President Donald Trump’s appointment of Matthew Whitaker as the new acting U.S. attorney general.
The Portland Press Herald reports the suit Gov.-elect Mills joined was filed by Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh last month. Whitaker became acting attorney general on Nov. 7 after Sessions was forced out. He had previously served as Session’s chief of staff.
The suit argues that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein should’ve gotten the job. According to the attorneys general, Trump circumvented the Constitution and the succession plan outlined by the Justice Department.
The Maine Attorney General’s Office said in a statement that Trump’s appointment is illegal.
Three U.S. senators have also filed a suit against the decision.
