Washington Wizards center Dwight Howard decided to undergo surgery for a piriformis muscle injury that has bothered him since training camp, and his recovery will sideline him for two to three months, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported.
ESPN previously reported that a nerve specialist in Los Angeles advised Howard to have surgery and the player might seek a second opinion. Instead, he had the operation Friday, Wojnarowski wrote.
The injury is to a muscle in the buttocks, which caused Howard to begin practicing with his new team very late into the preseason. He re-aggravated the injury Nov. 18 and hasn’t played since.
After starting the year 1-6, the Wizards went 4-5 in the nine-game stretch where Howard played. But since he’s been gone, they’ve managed to pull off wins against the Houston Rockets and New Orleans Pelicans.
Howard has averaged 12.8 points and 9.2 rebounds per game for Washington.
