Rep-elect. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said the recent reports of the Trump organization’s alleged business dealings with Russia during the the 2016 presidential race is more evidence for starting impeachment proceedings against the president.
Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said the reports are “really concerning” and said she is interested in learning what else investigators will dig up now that former Trump “fixer” Michael Cohen, in a guilty plea this week, claims to have lied to Congress about the work he did on a Trump Tower Moscow project in the middle of the campaign.
“I’ve been supportive of impeachment for some time now,” Ms. Ocasio-Cortez told reporters Friday outside the U.S. Capitol. “I think it just adds to the case.”
The New York Democrat questioned how congressional Republicans could have supported the efforts to impeach President Bill Clinton in 1988 over a sex scandal but have been silent when it comes to Mr. Trump’s potential wrongdoings.
“They are the ones that established that standard for impeachment,” she said.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has tried to downplay the calls from the left wing of her party for impeachment. The California Democrat has said she is waiting to see what special counsel Robert Mueller digs up in the Russia probe.
