CHICAGO (AP) - Sixty years ago, a fire at Our Lady of the Angels School in Chicago left 92 students and three nuns dead.
On Saturday, the tragedy that occurred on Dec. 1, 1958 at the Roman Catholic school will be commemorated with both survivors and family members of those that died present.
Cardinal Blase Cupich will officiate at a mass at Mission of Our Lady of the Angels on Chicago’s West Side. Fire survivor and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Johnathan Cain is scheduled to attend and perform “The Day They Became Angels,” a song he wrote about the tragedy.
The fire was one of the worst to occur in Chicago. Its cause has never been determined and no one has been held accountable. However, it ultimately led to sweeping nationwide changes in school safety design and fire safety codes.
