PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - U.S. Rep. David Cicilline has been elected to a Democratic leadership position in the House of Representatives.

Cicilline’s office said Thursday the Rhode Island Democrat will lead messaging efforts for his party as chairman of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee.

Cicilline says “the American people put their trust in the Democratic Party” and the hard work begins in January to deliver on promises they’ve made to create good-paying jobs, lower health care costs and end corruption.

He says he’s honored his colleagues trust him to help lead the caucus.

He previously served as a DPCC co-chairman. He considered running for assistant Democratic leader.

Cicilline, of Providence, was elected Nov. 6 to his fifth term in Congress representing the 1st Congressional District, which covers the easternmost part of Rhode Island.
