PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island officials are considering cuts at state agencies to reduce overspending.

The Providence Journal reports that state agencies are projected to hit $61.2 million in overspending this year. Estimates are based on spending during the first quarter of the fiscal year.

Acting prisons director Patricia Coyne-Fague says health care costs have increased. She suggests shifting prison populations to save on staff overtime.

Department of Revenue Director Mark Furcolo cited a reduction in car taxes for the projected $2.4 million deficit at the Division of Motor Vehicles. Furcolo says layoffs aren’t an option.
