HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Incoming U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes says she’s planning to support Nancy Pelosi as the next House speaker.

The Connecticut Democrat said in a statement Tuesday that she still believes “generational change within the Democratic Party” is needed, something she spoke about during her primary. But Hayes says she’s not willing to make change just for the sake of making change.

Hayes, a former National Teacher of the Year, says she came to Washington, D.C. with an open mind and was hopeful there would be multiple candidates for House speaker. But she says Pelosi was ultimately the only person who asked for her vote.

Hayes notes how “you can’t beat someone with no one.” Connecticut’s four other Democratic U.S. House members are also expected to support Pelosi for speaker.
